How to Build a DIY Backyard Playground on a Budget
With spring and summer right around the corner, I am so excited to spend our days outside playing and exploring. One of my favorite (ongoing!) DIY backyard projects has been our kids’ playground area.
If you want your kids to play outside for hours every day, live out in the country where walking to a park isn’t an option, and are working with a budget — read on, friend. This one’s for you.
When my firstborn was about a year and a half old and we had a growing collection of outdoor toys and play equipment, I decided we needed a dedicated play space in our yard. I was so tired of moving everything around every time we mowed. So I picked a spot and started brainstorming.
Here’s my step-by-step guide to building a DIY backyard playground on a budget!

Step 1: Start Hunting for Deals
Begin watching Facebook Marketplace, local buy/sell/trade pages, yard sales, and flea markets — anywhere you might find secondhand kids’ outdoor toys and equipment.
You can find some amazing deals! We scored our wooden swing set + treehouse + slide combo on Marketplace for $80!

Step 2: Pick the Perfect Spot
This wasn’t hard for us since we have a large side yard with one tree in the middle. I loved the idea of having natural shade on hot summer days, and the branches were sturdy enough to hang a swing from.
Think about:
- Shade
- Visibility from your house
- Drainage
- Proximity to water (for flower beds or water play)

Step 3: Choose Your Ground Material
I chose mulch because it was cost-effective and I could buy it by the truckload from our local lawn and garden store.
Other options include:
- Pebble rock
- Rubber mulch
- Turf
Pick what works best for your budget and your space!
Step 4: Add a Border
Since I wanted to keep this as budget-friendly as possible, I snagged 4x4x8 wooden boards from a local buy/sell/trade page for free. They’re not treated, but free was a price I couldn’t beat!
Some people opt for fencing, but that wasn’t necessary for us.

Step 5: Sketch It Out
Grab a piece of paper and sketch the size and shape of your area. Map out where equipment will go and leave space for future additions.
It doesn’t have to be fancy — just something to help you visualize the layout before you start.

Step 6: Get to Work!
Here’s how we built ours:
- Laid down black landscape fabric to kill weeds and grass
- Installed the wood border
- Created a circular rock pit bordered with large stones we found in our pasture
To make the rock pit:
- My husband dug a hole about 1–2 feet deep
- We lined it with a brown tarp (cut to size)
- Filled it with pea gravel
The girls LOVE playing with shovels and dump trucks in this area.
Finally, we filled the main play space with mulch and ta-da! It was ready for equipment and toys.

Useful Tips
Anchor Your Trampoline
If you have a trampoline (my parents bought the girls a toddler one with a net for their birthday a few years ago), make sure you anchor it down. There’s nothing worse than a windstorm sending it flying! We use deep stakes and rope, and it has stayed put every year.
Stabilize Play Equipment
Use landscape or patio stones under playset legs to help with leveling and stability — especially if your ground cover is mulch and may shift over time.
Leave Room for Yourself
Make space for a bench or cozy seating area. I love sitting outside watching the girls play. With baby #3 coming this summer, I know a shady nursing spot will quickly become my favorite place.
It Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect
Don’t stress about having it finished all at once. We’ve slowly added and changed things as our kids grow or when we find a great deal.
Last year I found the cutest DIY idea on Pinterest turning square landscaping stones into a hopscotch path, so we added that! My husband also found a giant rock while cleaning out a pond and brought it over for a natural climbing feature.

Add a Little Whimsy
Leave room for a small (or big!) flower garden. We created a flower bed around the base of our tree, and the girls love being in charge of watering it each year.
We also added:
- A bird feeder
- Wind chimes
Do whatever makes it feel fun and magical for your family.

Final Thoughts
I hope this inspires you and your kiddos to get outside and tackle a project together. I love involving my kids in the process so they feel proud of the space they helped create.
I’d love to see your backyard play space transformation — leave a comment and tell me about it!
